We are Scotland

About Us

The National Trust for Scotland Foundation USA encourages Americans to participate in caring for the irreplaceable natural and cultural heritage properties protected by the National Trust for Scotland. By raising visibility and funding for urgent conservation activities in Scotland, we can make sure that the rich history and traditions shared by Scots and Americans are preserved for future generations.

Our History

Falkland Palace Garden

The National Trust for Scotland was founded in 1931 to harness the energies of the people of Scotland in helping to preserve the country’s history. It has since grown to be Scotland’s largest conservation movement and membership organization, with more than 330,000 members worldwide. The Trust owns and manages 129 visitor properties and oversees 400 Conservation Agreements, including:

  • 1 Dual World Heritage Site, St. Kilda—the only one in the UK
  • 188,000 acres of countryside
  • 26 castles and country houses
  • 35 gardens
  • 50,000+ artifacts
  • 4 birthplaces of famous Scots
  • 16 islands
  • 7 nature reserves
  • 4 battle sites
  • 72 holiday properties
  • 349 miles of footpaths
  • 46 Munros (mountains of over 3,000 ft.)

The National Trust for Scotland Foundation USA supports the Trust in their educated and responsible approach to conservation by annually promoting a range of the Trust’s priority projects for the consideration of American donors. Since 2000, the Foundation has provided more than $8 million in funding for the Trust’s work. Donations to The National Trust for Scotland Foundation USA, a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, are tax-deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law.
