ROBERT SMAIL'S PRINTING WORKS FEASIBILITY STUDY
Robert Smail's Printing Works is the National Trust for Scotland's very own Victorian letterpress printing house. Smail's is unique in that the property has operated for over 140 years, continues to use traditional printing techniques, and has much of the original printing equipment. The printed work produced commercially at the property has become an increasingly important income stream for the Trust.
A feasibility study is needed to guide the Trust as they explore and plan the options available at the property. The study will look at the feasibility of expanding the built property at Smail's to accommodate a range of facilities needed improve the visitor experience, increase educational programs, and streamline management of the property.
Currently the printing works is at the limit of what it can do with existing resources and there is a need to find opportunities for growth in the future. The study will focus on:
• How to raise education potential of the property through programs and access to the archival material.
• How the property might offer a wider range of printing styles and products, potentially increasing the property’s income.
• How to better manage the conservation of the paper collections and increase storage space on site.
• How to provide a proper workspace for staff and volunteers, as well as space for visitors requiring access to the archive.
Project costs and funding requirement: $7,300.
